Department of Employment & Workplace Relations

Indigenous Employment Policy (IEP)
This has been implemented progressively from July 1999 in response to continuing high unemployment rates among Indigenous Australians and a demographic profile which indicated that the labour market disadvantages of Indigenous Australians would, in all likelihood, increase further unless special efforts were made.
The IEP is part of the Government’s broader strategy for reducing the overall level of disadvantage amongst Indigenous Australians. The IEP reflects the Government’s commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous Australians and builds on the social coalition between the Government, business and the voluntary sector

Australian Public Service Commission
Employment and Capability Strategy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employees (AES)
The AES receives nominal funding by the Australian Government through the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations in conjunction with the support of Corporate Australia. Our corporate partners include IAG Insurance, Rio Tinto, Telstra, Toyota, ANZ Bank and the Commonwealth Bank. The AES mentors clients and build relationships that give employers a better understanding of Aboriginal people. The Strategy aims to:
• stabilise employment numbers over the next two years, then increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment in the mainstream Australian Public Service;
• contribute to increased social equity by improving Indigenous peoples income levels and employment opportunities in the wider Australian employment market;
• increase the extent to which government agencies are able to use the existing and potential skills and capacity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees in order to meet their business needs for skilled employees, including in areas of specific skill shortage and recruitment difficulty; and
• build the capacity of the APS generally to provide more effective service delivery to Indigenous people.
