Workers

The three steps to improving services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people described in the introduction apply to management committee and board members, ie:

  • improving understanding
  • seeing the implications for service delivery and community development
  • improving your service delivery and community development through changes to practice.

Some of the practice implications for workers include:

  • understanding the emotional impact on Aboriginal people of their experiences and their families experiences and ways of working with them appropriately
  • understanding the barriers to ATSI people gaining living skills (for example being separated from their family) and strategies for supporting people in gaining living skills
  • understanding the historical reasons for the lack of trust of institutions and how to build bridges between ATSI people and services and organisations
  • modifying case management practices for ATSI clients
  • being aware of what is culturally appropriate for the specific services being provided

This web site includes starting points for working on these types of questions. It also includes background information on lots of questions such as:

  • Who are Elders?
  • What is The Dreaming?
  • What happened to the Stolen Generation?
  • What's Native Title?

The web site also includes a section where you can test your knowledge - there are two versions:

Version A Quick and easy test - is a learning aid - you can quickly check your answers to the questions and link to further background information.

Version B Written test- is a more formal written test; the questions and your answers will be emailed to you and you will also have access to sample answers. This version is useful for on-line workplace training.

You may wish to consider asking your supervisor about using this web site as part of you ongoing training and development and using the written tests to check your knowledge. The questions and answers could be used in supervision or for discussion at a staff meeting.
