Coordinators, managers and team leaders

The three steps to improving services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people described in the introduction apply to management committee and board members, ie::

  • improving understanding
  • seeing the implications for service delivery and community development
  • improving your service delivery and community development through changes to practice.

Some of the practice implications for coordinators and team leaders are:

  • acknowledging the the family and kinship expectations on ATSI staff
  • changing case management practices to make them suitable for ATSI clients
  • modifying the organisations policies and procedures to reflect good practice
  • ensuring the organisation's staff have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate services to ATSI people

Examples of some of the more specific questions managers and coordinators may need to answer are:

  • When ATSI staff are working with their communities what are the additional pressures they experience in their work because they are ATSI?
  • How can our centre/offices be made more welcoming to the ATSI community?
  • What are the key issues it would be useful to discuss with staff at team meetings or in supervision in relation to making our services more appropriate for ATSI people.

This web site includes starting points for working on these types of questions.

The web site also includes a section where you can test your knowledge - there are two versions:

Version A Quick and easy test - is a learning aid - you can quickly check your answers to the questions and link to further background information.

Version B Written test is a more formal written test; the questions and your answers will be emailed to you and you will also have access to sample answers. This version is useful for on-line workplace training.

You may wish to consider whether staff in your organisation could be asked to use this web site and then test their knowledge as part of their training and development. The questions and answers could be used in supervision or for discussion at a staff meeting.
