Board and committee members

The three steps to improving services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people described in the introduction apply to management committee and board members, ie::

  • improving understanding
  • seeing the implications for service delivery and community development
  • improving your service delivery and community development through changes to practice.

Some of the broad practice implications for board and committee members include:

  • commitment to appropriate and accessible services to ATSI people
  • acknowledging the prior ownership of the land
  • adopting a statement of principle for reconciliation
  • consulting with the local ATSI community when planning services
  • consulting with the ATSI community about how to make the service welcoming for ATSI people
  • ensuring the organisation's staff have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate services to ATSI people

Examples of some of the more specific questions Board and Committee members may need to answer are:

  • Who are the ATSI communities in the areas we provide services to?
  • Who are the Elders?
  • What is an appropriate process for consulting with the ATSI community?
  • Are there policy issues we need to be considering to ensure services are appropriate?

This web site includes starting points for working on these types of questions.

The web site also includes a section where you can test your knowledge - there are two versions:

Version A Quick and easy test is a learning aid - you can quickly check your answers to the questions and link to further background information.

Version B Written test- is a more formal written test; the questions and your answers will be emailed to you and you will also have access to sample answers. This version is useful for on-line workplace training. Your manager or coordinator may wish to consider whether staff in your organisation could be asked to use this web site and then test their knowledge as part of their training and development. The questions and answers could be used in supervision or for discussion at a staff meeting.
